Sourdough #1: Cultural Infrastructures in Rural Areas – A Cartography of Collective Practice with Katharina Spanlang
In this workshop, social designer and curator Katharina Spanlang explores the practice of the Festival of Regions as a “cartography” of cooperation, community care, and the building of cultural infrastructures in rural contexts. Through concrete project examples and collective reflection, participants will co-create a visual map of cultural practice — a tool to make relationships, conflicts, and sustainable structures of cultural work visible.
Participants are invited to contribute their own perspectives, connect concepts, places, and experiences, and collectively formulate a manifesto of shared practice.

The Festival of Regions is one of Austria’s most prominent festivals for contemporary art and culture. Since 1993, it has been held every two years outside of urban areas and cultural centers in Upper Austria. In the more than 30 years of its existence, the Festival of Regions has focused on highly topical and timeless issues: home, work, asylum, hostility, migration, exclusion. With its approach of addressing social issues and everyday life with contemporary art, the festival aims to promote dialogue between the local population and local, regional, and international artists. Participation is a top priority. The festival aims to leave its mark, initiate and stimulate discussion, reinforce or initiate desires for change, take the needs of the population seriously, and work with them to develop visions for the future.
Katharina Spanlang is a social designer, curator, and cultural manager. She is a board member of the Festival of Regions and co-founder of the association Leischn, through which she realizes art and cultural projects in rural areas. Her work focuses on collective practice, social design, and the creation of cultural infrastructures beyond urban centers.
