Wavering Worlds 101020 MAJA OSOJNIK / STEVE BATES
Wavering Worlds 101020
MAJA OSOJNIK / STEVE BATES Performance: October 9th, 2026
Wavering Worlds extends its exploration beyond the spaces of bb15, taking the series into the New Cathedral, directly opposite the gallery. Since bb15 moved to its current location, the proximity of this monumental building has offered an opportunity to engage with its distinctive architectural and acoustic conditions.
The series approaches the cathedral not simply as a venue, but as an active component of the artistic encounter. Its scale, spatial configuration and particular acoustics become parameters through which artists develop site-responsive approaches.
Initiated in 2025, Wavering Worlds continues in 2026, further developing this ongoing investigation into the relationship between experimental sound practices and their spatial contexts.
Meeting place is the north entrance of the New Cathedral (Mariendom) next to the tower. Doors open at 6:45pm
Concert starts at 7pm sharp! No entry after the start of the concert
Maja Osojnik is a Vienna-based singer, composer and electroacoustic sound artist working between song, noise, experimental composition and sound art. Using voice, Paetzold bass recorders, field recordings and lo-fi electronics, she creates immersive sonic environments that reward attentive listening.
Trained in early and contemporary music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, she has developed a distinctive language described as dark, poetic and deeply affecting. Her works, including Doorways and the solo album Let Them Grow, combine emotional intensity with formal precision and invite deep listening and reflection. Osojnik performs internationally, blurring boundaries between concert, installation and physical theatre. She also composes for film, theatre, dance and radio, and collaborates in projects such as Rdeča Raketa and Soundcomics with Natasha Gangl. She teaches in Vienna and Salzburg, founded MAMKA RECORDS, and has received numerous awards, including Austrian State Grants for Composition and the Pasticcio Prize. Her radio drama works received first prizes at the Berlin Radio Drama Festival as well as the Ö1/ORF Prize for Radio Drama of the Year.
Steve Bates is an artist and musician. Through his work he listens to thresholds, boundaries and borders, points of contact and conflict. Information and signal feed back onto themselves creating new situations and events. Sometimes unpredictable and chaotic, at other times this same feedback is used as a way to provide stability. The history of ideas, experiences, and materials are an influence on his work and often lead to a research-heavy path resulting in suites of work around a theme. Recent topics have included the history of barbed wire, the night as a space of freedom and libidinal desire, feedback as it occurs in sound and video art, politics, economics, and biology, pathological and non-pathological auditory hallucination and most recently, the sound of Hell. Or hells. The sonic is the starting point for his projects which are evocations of communication networks and systems, or expressions of spatial and temporal experience. He frequently works with material in situ and in relation to their sites while at the same time recognizing the many complexities involved in working this way. He releases music both solo and collaboratively, often through his own small scale publishing and curatorial project, The Dim Coast, which he runs with artist, jake moore. His work has been performed and exhibited in Canada, the USA, Europe, Chile and Senegal. He works in the field, on the air, in museological/gallery and performance contexts. These shifting territories reflect the content of his practice.
